About Laura
Laura began her post-secondary education in the Music Performance program at Mount Royal College in the studio of Tema Blackstone. After taking a four year break to pursue competitive cycling, Laura completed her Diploma in Performance and Bachelor of Music while studying piano with Arthur Rowe at the University of Victoria (UVIC).
While obtaining her Master's in Musicology at UVIC under the guidance of Michelle Fillion, Laura continued to study piano with Arthur Rowe and accompany instrumentalists. Laura's thesis, Transcendent Sounds: The Early Piano Music of Alexander Scriabin, focuses on the philosophy, analysis, and performance practices of Scriabin's early piano works. Her main academic interest lies in Late-Classical to Late-Romantic piano music.
Laura is a full member of the Alberta Registered Music Teachers' Association and has been teaching piano for almost 20 years. She gained experience as a student teacher before running her own studio. Laura is a patient and thorough teacher with strong theoretical knowledge, who believes in positive encouragement, effective practice and technique, and fostering an enjoyment of music. She has also been active as an accompanist from a young age, largely with strings and voice.
In addition to her musical pursuits, Laura trains casually for cycling and retains a love of sport. She applies elements of sport preparation to her piano endeavors, and vice versa. Laura's diverse background as both an athlete and a musician gives her a unique perspective on teaching, practicing, and performing.
